Hello Parents, this is Dr. Lauri Tobias, Superintendent of District 50, calling you with an update on H1N1 vaccinations. Mercy Health System has told us that they now have vaccinations available, so we have scheduled vaccination clinics in each of our schools. Vaccinations will be provided for all students who have submitted permission forms on Friday November 20th or Tuesday November 24th. If you have not submitted a form, but would like for your student to be immunized, you can turn in the form up to November 18th. The schedule for vaccination clinics is as follows: On Friday, November 20th, Washington School at 8:30, Central School at 10:30 and Jefferson at 11:30. On Tuesday, November 24th, the Junior High at 8:30 and the High School at noon. All vaccinations will take place within the respective schools. Times are approximate. The focus of this effort is to provide vaccinations for students. We have received a strong response and anticipate using all available vaccinations for Harvard students. Parents and other family members should seek vaccinations elsewhere. This message will also be posted on the District website at www.cusd50.org. Thank you for your understanding and patience on this issue. As always, I encourage you to call or e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!

10-29-2009 H1N1 BuzzLine Message

Good Evening parents, this is Dr. Lauri Tobias, Superintendent of District 50, calling you with an update about the H1N1 virus. In conjunction with Mercy Health System, we will also be offering H1N1 vaccinations to those students who would like to receive them. Tomorrow, on Friday, all students will be given a packet of information to bring home. This packet has more information on the H1N1 virus and a permission slip allowing your child to receive a vaccination. Mercy is asking for those who are able to pay $15 to cover costs, but no one who wants a vaccine will be turned away. Please fill out a separate form for each child you want to have immunized and return it to the main office of your child’s school. Forms must be completely filled out for your child to receive a vaccination. At this point we don’t know when vaccinations will be available for us, but we want to be prepared to act as soon as they are available, which is why you are getting this information tomorrow. We will let you know when vaccinations are available and where they will be administered. As a reminder, if your child already has symptoms, the Health Department has told us that we should treat this virus the same as a regular flu virus. That means if your child has flu-like symptoms, you should keep him or her home from school. If a child comes to school with flu-like symptoms, we will send them home. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you!

10-21-09 H1N1 BuzzLine Message:
Hello, this is Dr. Lauri Tobias, Superintendent of District 50. I am calling you tonight to briefly address the some of the questions we have received regarding the H1N1 flu. We have been advised by the McHenry County Health Department and the CDC that, for clinical and public health purposes, we should treat the H1N1 flu the same as regular, seasonal flu. The Health Department advises, and I am quoting here, “Having a confirmed case [of H1N1 flu] should not change your practices, since it is likely that your school already has at least one H1N1 ...” Our current practices include thorough cleaning of schools, with extra attention paid to high touch areas such as door knobs and keyboards, encouraging parents to keep sick children at home and isolating students who do come to school with flu-like symptoms. Parents, we ask for your help with this. If your child is showing flu-like symptoms, please keep them home. There is a great deal of information on our website to help you better understand the H1N1 flu, its symptoms and dangers and best practices for dealing with it. As always, please call us if you have questions. I also want to remind you that, due to Parent/Teacher conferences, students will not have school on Thursday or Friday. Thank you and have a great, long weekend!
