Strategic Goals

Written by Bill Clow

The Harvard Community Unit School District Board has developed and approved the following four strategic goals. The goals serve to provide a framework and guide to Board and Administrative decisions, as well as to share with families, students, community members and staff the values the Board find to be important for the success of the school district and our students.

Academic Excellence
Develop an environment for academic excellence by focusing on:
• Student achievement at all levels, as measured by more than standardized testing
• Class size
• Variety of opportunities, especially in advanced placement and extra-curricular opportunities
• Preparing students for promotion
• Recruitment and retention of quality staff

Communications
Create and implement a strategic communications plan that:
• Addresses the communication needs of all D50 constituents
• Assists D50 to achieve its educational and financial goals.
• Fosters 2-way communication and community involvement.

Fiscal Responsibility
Manage D50 revenues and expenses in order to:
• Maintain a balanced budget
• Identify new sources of revenue and cost savings
• Balancing fiscal responsibility with academic and facility priorities
• Continue to work with the City of Harvard, McHenry County, and other appropriate units of government to enhance revenue sources for District 50.

Facilities
Facilities represent a major investment and asset of D50.
• Develop a plan to ensure current facilities are operated and maintained so that all available space is used for the best use and to maximum advantage
• Evaluate planned and anticipated growth within the School District, using the Naperville Study to project growth of the student population
• Revise the demographic study and implementation plan using appropriate software and other available sources to reflect anticipated growth
