TITLE I

Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to state and local educational agencies to meet the needs of educationally deprived, at-risk children. The goal of Title I is to provide instructional services and activities to meet the needs of disadvantaged children identified as failing or most at risk of failing the state’s challenging performance standards.

What schools are served by Title 1?

This program serves children in elementary and secondary schools who have demonstrated that extra educational assistance is needed. Additionally, Title I services must be provided to children who attend parochial and private schools within the district.

How does District 50 receive Title I money?

The federal government provides funding to Illinois.

Our state government sends this money to school districts. How much money District 50 receives is determined by the number of low-income students in attendance.

Title I schools then:
? Identify the students at their school who need the most educational assistance based on the criteria established by that school. Students do NOT have to be from low-income families to qualify for services.
? Set goals for improving the skills of educationally disadvantaged students of their school.
? Develop programs to support/supplement regular classroom instruction.
? Measure student progress to determine the success of the Title I program for each student.

What will Title I do for my child?

The Title I program will provide your child with additional educational assistance beyond the regular classroom

Criteria for Participation in Title I in District 50

Students are selected for supplementary Title I instruction upon consideration of several criteria. Examples of the criteria used in the Harvard Schools are report card grades, teacher referrals, Star Reading Test scores, D.I.B.E.L.S. performance, standardized test scores, previous Title I service, and modified reading inventories.

If the number of students eligible for Title I services is greater than can be served by the Title I staff, students with the greatest need are served first.
