The Illinois Principals Association (IPA) Kishwaukee Region has named Harvard High School Principal Carl Hobbs its High School Principal of the Year. He will be honored at the regional awards ceremony on Jan. 28, 2026.

The annual awards recognize school leaders who create positive school climates, foster community partnerships, advocate for students and lead with creativity, collaboration and vision.

“This honor is a reflection of the amazing students, staff and community I’m privileged to serve each day,” Hobbs said.

Now in his ninth year as principal at Harvard High School and his 21st year in K-12 education, Hobbs has implemented programming designed to expand opportunities and prepare students for life after graduation. One of his most noteworthy initiatives is the school’s Flex Mod schedule, which has transformed how students access learning.

Hobbs has also strengthened key partnerships with McHenry County College, Rising Scholars and the Harvard Community Education Foundation to develop pathways that expand student access. Through programs like DUO, which allows students to earn an associate degree along with their high school diploma, and Advanced Placement and micro-certification opportunities, Harvard High School students can pursue rigorous, future-focused coursework that better positions them for college, career and life.

Looking ahead, Hobbs is focused on college and career readiness, particularly as the demand for skilled trades continues to grow. Harvard High School is expanding its Career and Technical Education, Business and Industrial Technology programs and developing stackable credential opportunities that give students a competitive edge as they enter the workforce.

Hobbs said some of his most rewarding experiences come from the “quiet successes,” like watching students overcome academic or personal challenges and walking across the stage at graduation.

“We know that, aside from teachers, principals have the greatest positive impact on student success,” said Harvard Community Unit School District 50 Superintendent Dr. Brandon C. White. “We are proud to have Carl as part of our instructional leadership team, guiding both adult and student learning at Harvard High School.”

CUSD 50 congratulates Carl Hobbs on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his leadership and commitment to students.
