CUSD 50 Staff Spotlight: Kim Differding, Instructional Coach at Crosby Elementary
"As a lifelong member of the Harvard community and a graduate of Harvard High School, it means a lot to give back to the place that shaped me. I received my bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University and went on to earn my Master’s degree in Reading Specialist from George Williams College of Aurora University."
"Education isn’t just what I do—it’s part of my story. I come from a family on both my mom’s and dad’s sides who have committed themselves to supporting schools, and that shared passion has had a lasting impact on who I am today. I have worked in an educational setting for 25 years. This is my 13th year working in the district in various roles. I began my career in Harvard teaching 2nd grade for 6 years before moving to 1st grade for another 6 years. This is my first year serving the district as an Instructional Coach supporting teachers at Crosby."
"I love that every day brings something new—each day presents different opportunities to learn, grow, and reflect. Building meaningful relationships with both students and colleagues is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. I truly value the collaboration I’ve experienced with staff; learning from others’ strengths, perspectives, and expertise has shaped me in so many ways. Serving in an instructional coaching role has been especially meaningful, as it allows me to support not just individual students, but entire classrooms and teams. It’s given me the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than myself—working alongside educators to strengthen practices, support student success, and make a broader impact across the school community."
"What I love most about the Harvard School District is, without a doubt, the staff and students I have the privilege of working with every day. There is such a strong sense of collaboration where we learn from one another’s strengths, ideas, and experiences, and I am constantly inspired by the passion and dedication around me. It’s a place where people genuinely push each other to grow, take risks, and try new things—all in the best interest of students. What truly stands out is the level of care. The people here don’t just care about student success—they care about each other. That creates relationships that go beyond just coworkers and fosters a real sense of belonging and community. Being part of a team that is so committed to making a difference is what makes this district such a special place."
"For others who want to spread more positivity in their own lives or workplaces, my advice would be to start with small, intentional actions. A kind word, a genuine thank you, or taking a moment to truly listen can have a powerful impact. Positivity grows through everyday interactions, especially when people feel seen, valued, and supported. I also believe it’s important to focus on building strong relationships—when we take time to connect with others, celebrate their strengths, and encourage one another, it naturally creates a stronger sense of community and belonging. In a school setting, keeping students at the center helps ground that positivity in purpose. Ultimately, positivity is contagious, and when we lead with authenticity, kindness, and a commitment to lifting others up, we help create an environment where both people and communities can thrive."
