With the start of a new school year comes the return of Staff Spotlight!
Our first Staff Spotlight of the 2026–2027 school year is Katie Carlson, School Counselor at Harvard Junior High! We’re excited to introduce you to Katie and highlight the amazing work she does to support our students.
"I grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis called New Hope. I crossed the border to WI for college and spent 6 years at UW-Stout. The best years of my life! I got a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies followed by a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. When I realized School Counseling was the place for me, I went back to UW-Whitewater for 1 year and got the School Counseling Licensure."
"I have been a school counselor since 2006. I have worked in WI, FL, and IL. I just like helping people I guess, that’s what it all began with. I also need variety in my job and lots of movement, and I love the kids. So middle school is a perfect fit for me."
"I love the kids and the fact that I am rarely bored. Middle school has a lot of action, which I need. I also remember all too well the trials and tribulations of middle school, and it brings me satisfaction to know I helped a student get through a rough day or a difficult situation."
"I love the sense of community. The demographics of the school. Nice, supportive, co-workers, and THE KIDS!!! The kids in Harvard are sweet, genuine, and hilarious. For the most part, they have morals and manners, which makes them easy to work with. They are also the main reason I return year after year."
"Choose your battles with kids. Don’t let the little things get in the way of the relationship you have built or are building. Also, have other meaningful things in your life so work isn’t all consuming. AND access your sense of humor. There is plenty to laugh about with the kids. And there is always a break right around the corner."
