Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Ages 3-5

Harvard District 50 is required by state law to provide education to students ages 3 to 5 who have been identified as needing special education due to a disability.  The district provides an integrated early childhood program at Washington School. A multi-disciplinary team will utilize a team approach toward learning in working with students with disabilities and non-disabled students’ age 3-5 years. Preschool For All (Pre-K At Risk)

Harvard District 50’s Preschool for All serves children ages 3 to 5 years old who are screened and identified as not progressing at a rate anticipated for potential success in kindergarten due to one or more at-risk variables. At-risk factors can include delays identified on screening instruments in the area of intellectual processing, academics, speech/communication, social-emotional development, and/or motor development. In addition, family environmental factors such as low income, homeless, parent/sibling with disability, parent education level, family structure, non-English speaking household, and others are also considered when identifying at-risk eligibility. Please call Washington Elementary to schedule a developmental screening appointment.

Preschool For All- Prevention Initiative 0-3

Harvard District 50’s Prevention Initiative program offers parent-child interaction opportunities and child development information through bi-weekly personal visits facilitated by our Parent Educators. Families also participate in group connections, parenting workshops, and adult education opportunities. Families with children who are 0 to 3 years of age must meet at-risk criteria. Please contact the Washington Elementary principal and parent educators for more details.

Cross-Categorical Resource Programs

There are resource level programs offered in all elementary, middle, and high schools in CUSD 50. This program offers learners with many types of disabilities support within the learning environment less than 60% of their day. Please contact the Building Principal or Special Services Department for additional information.

Cross Categorical Instructional/ Self Contained

Life Skills

The Life Skills programs in CUSD 50 are specialized programs supporting students with low-incidence disabilities. These programs are designed as Elementary (Grades K-5), Middle School (Grade 6-8), and High School (Grade 9-12). These programs utilize the use of the community resources, alternate academic and functional curriculum to address the needs of the students. Therapeutic Day School

A program designed for students to receive instruction in a specialized school outside of the district. The district must try to meet a student’s needs in the least restrictive environment. However, Given the student’s needs, the student may be recommended to attend state-approved private facility at district cost. In this situation, the district provides transportation to and from the private facility.

Residential

A program designed for instruction in a specialized school and lives on the grounds of the program outside of the district. Participation in this program is based on extreme situations with the collaboration of district and outside agencies. This program serves as the least restrictive environment based on the severity and nature of the student’s disability. The district works in collaboration with the outside residential program/ agency to meet student’s needs.

Home/ Hospital Program

A program designed for instruction at home or in the hospital based on medical needs. This service is available to students with health problems, temporary illnesses, or injuries who will be out of school a minimum of ten consecutive days and can provide a written statement from a physician. The homebound teacher is coordinator through the special services department and the homeschool building.
