Safety Drills

Throughout the year Harvard CUSD 50 schools use drills to ensure students and staff are knowledgeable in safety procedures.

Bus Evacuation Drill
Students practice exiting a bus in an emergency. The drill also includes instruction in safe boarding and exiting procedures with specific emphasis on when and how to approach, board, disembark, and move away from a bus.

Fire Drill
Each student should understand the importance of fire drills and not be afraid when the fire alarm sounds. Each class follows an exit route and are accounted for while waiting quietly with teachers outside the building.

Lockdown Drill
The drill secures the school building and safely shelters all students, staff, and visitors inside. The purpose of this drill is to keep students safe from any danger outside or inside the building. All of the perimeter doors to the school building will be locked and will remain locked until the danger or issue outside or inside the building is removed. No one is allowed to enter or leave the building until the authorities authorize a release.

Tornado Drill
The purpose of this drill is to be prepared to move to a safe location within the building in case of severe weather or tornados.

We encourage you to talk to your students about what to do in the event of a crisis.
